Sync MetaMask Across Mobile & Desktop

Why sync MetaMask across devices?

Want to open a swap quickly on your laptop, then sign it from your phone? Or prefer doing heavy contract interactions on desktop while keeping a lighter mobile wallet for on-the-go swaps? Syncing the same MetaMask wallet across mobile and desktop gives you that flexibility.

I use a synced setup: desktop for complex dApp flows and the phone for quick checks and WalletConnect confirmations. Short tasks on mobile. Longer sessions on desktop. It saves time. But there are trade-offs — security, accidental approvals, and network differences — which I cover below.

Which method you choose depends on risk tolerance and convenience. Want speed? Pairing with QR is fast. Want maximum control? Restore with your seed phrase on the device you trust.

Sync options at a glance (which method to use)

Method What it copies Pros Cons
QR pairing (extension ↔ mobile) Accounts + session access (paired) Fast, no manual seed entry Pairing requires both devices; review prompts carefully
Seed phrase restore Full wallet (all accounts) Full control, works anywhere Entering seed phrase risks exposure if done incorrectly
Import private key (single account) One account only Useful for segregating funds Private key exposure; single-account only
WalletConnect (for dApps) Transaction signing only Keeps keys on mobile while using desktop dApps Not a true sync; only signs dApp txs

Step-by-step: Pair MetaMask extension with mobile (QR pairing)

This is the most common “sync MetaMask extension with mobile” scenario for daily users who want the same wallet on two devices without typing the seed phrase.

  1. On desktop open the MetaMask extension. Look for the profile/account menu and a "Connect to Mobile" or "Sync with Mobile" option (label can change by version).
  2. The extension will display a QR code. (Screenshot description: QR code and a short pairing explanation on the extension.)
  3. On your phone open the MetaMask mobile app, go to Settings → Scan or Connect to Desktop, and scan the code.
  4. Review the pairing prompt on both devices carefully. The extension asks for confirmation; the mobile app will request a signed confirmation.
  5. Approve and wait. Devices will show synced accounts after the handshake.

Notes from experience: the UI text varies by release. If you can’t find the option, update both the extension and mobile app first. And always read what the prompts say before approving.

Step-by-step: Restore a wallet with your seed phrase (full copy)

Want the same MetaMask wallet on mobile and laptop by restoring the seed phrase? This is a full copy and the most straightforward method if pairing isn’t available.

  1. Install MetaMask on the target device (install-mobile or install-extension).
  2. Choose "Import wallet" or "Restore wallet" during setup.
  3. Enter your seed phrase exactly, set a password/PIN and complete the setup.
  4. Manually add any custom networks or tokens you used on the other device (custom RPCs are not always copied).

Important: never paste your seed phrase into a website or store it in cloud notes. If you’re unsure, follow our backup and recovery guide first.

Import a single account (private key) — limited sync

If you only need one account on the second device (for example a hot spending account separate from your main stash), export the account private key from the first device and import it on the second.

  • Desktop: Account > Export Private Key (requires your password).
  • Mobile: Settings > Import Account > Enter private key.

This avoids exposing the full seed phrase but increases risk because private keys live as plain strings during transfer. Treat this method as for small balances or temporary use. See accounts-key-management for details.

Use WalletConnect: sign desktop dApps from mobile

Want to use a desktop dApp but sign from your mobile wallet? WalletConnect is the standard.

  • On the dApp click Connect Wallet → choose WalletConnect.
  • A QR code appears on desktop. Scan it with MetaMask mobile (WalletConnect scanning option).
  • Approve session and sign transactions on your phone.

This is not the same as syncing the extension with mobile. WalletConnect only forwards the dApp session and signing requests to your mobile — private keys stay on mobile. That makes it useful when you want desktop comfort for browsing and mobile security for signatures. See walletconnect-and-mobile-browser and how-to-walletconnect.

Troubleshooting: sync mobile MetaMask disabled & common errors

Problem: "sync mobile MetaMask disabled" or pairing not available? Try this checklist:

  • Update both apps to the latest version.
  • Restart browser and mobile app. Simple but works.
  • Check camera permissions on mobile (QR scan needs it).
  • Disable conflicting wallet extensions temporarily and try pairing again.
  • If you plan to reinstall the extension, confirm you have your seed phrase backed up first.

If balances don’t show after pairing, add the custom RPC or token manually — network and token lists don’t always copy over. See mobile-sync-troubleshooting and extension-troubleshooting.

Security checklist when syncing across devices

  • Never share your seed phrase. Ever. If someone asks for it during pairing, stop.
  • Only scan QR codes you initiate on your own devices. Phishing QR codes exist.
  • Use separate accounts for high-value holdings and daily spending.
  • Revoke unnecessary token approvals regularly via revoke-approvals. I once revoked an unlimited approval after a sloppy swap; it saved me.
  • For large sums, use a hardware wallet (connect-ledger, connect-trezor). Pairing mobile and extension should never replace a hardware-backed workflow.

But what about cloud backups? Avoid storing seed phrases in cloud storage or screenshots. Paper and secure hardware are still safer for recovery.

Practical workflows for daily DeFi use

  • Quick swaps on the go: use mobile for small trades, and enable transaction simulation if available.
  • Heavy contract interactions (complex staking, governance) on desktop where you can read the dApp UI properly.
  • Use WalletConnect to keep keys on mobile while browsing desktop dApps.
  • Keep one account funded for gas; use another for cold storage.

If you handle multiple chains, remember custom RPCs and Layer 2 networks often require separate setup on each device. See networks-multi-chain and gas-fees-and-eip-1559.

FAQ

Q: Is it safe to keep crypto in a hot wallet? A: Hot wallets are convenient but carry risk. For day-to-day small balances they’re fine. For larger holdings use hardware wallets or split funds. See security-best-practices.

Q: How do I revoke token approvals after syncing? A: Use the revoke tool in the extension or third-party revocation tools (approve only trusted contracts). See revoke-approvals.

Q: What happens if I lose my phone? A: Restore your wallet on a new device with your seed phrase. Also lock or unregister any paired sessions where possible. Read backup-and-recovery-options.

Q: Can I have the same MetaMask wallet on two devices? A: Yes — via pairing, seed restore, or private-key import. Which one you choose depends on convenience and risk.

Q: Why isn’t my balance showing after sync? A: Check network selection and custom RPCs. If tokens are missing, add the token contract on the device. See not-showing-balance.

Final checklist & next steps

  • If you want quick access without typing your seed phrase: try QR pairing.
  • If you need a full copy on a second device: restore with your seed phrase (only on a trusted device).
  • For desktop dApp signing from mobile: use WalletConnect.

Follow the setup guides: install-mobile, install-extension and secure your recovery with backup-and-recovery-options. If something goes wrong, our mobile-sync-troubleshooting and extension-troubleshooting pages walk through the usual fixes.
